Before reading this book I heard many different things. Mostly that it was a very dark contemporary and that it was very different. E. Lockhart was successful in writing a book that was different from the other contemporaries out there and I know that is why so many people have been raving about it. Now don’t worry this review is spoiler free, I would never want anyone to spoil a book like this. It had such a mind-blowing and messed up ending. I was constantly guessing about what would happen at the end because I knew it had to be something messed up and I was not disappointed!
We Were Liars is about a very rich family named the Sinclair’s. Every summer the entire family consisting of the grandparents, their three girls and their children, would go to their Island. The three eldest of each immediate family became really close and were called the Liars. Then one year Johnny one of the Liars brought his friend Gat to the island for the summer. Cadence and Gat become very close and start to fall for each other during their summer 15, but then the accident happens. Cadence doesn’t remember any details about the end of summer 15 and she becomes seriously ill after her accident. Finally two years later she returns to the island to be with the Liars again. But will she ever remember what happened that one summer if no one will tell her?
Cadence was a very interesting character and it was fun to read from an unreliable narrator because you don’t know enough to completely understand what is going on, which I think is perfect for this story. I also really liked the other Liars. They were funny and added some relief to the story. I do find that Cadence’s feelings toward Gat were a little too overplayed but considering everything she went through it’s understandable. The book was very well written and the way the stories were incorporated were incredible! I found the plot very gripping and with the very short chapters it was easy to become attached to this book and finish it as fast as possible!
Overall I give this book a solid 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads and around a 95%. I can’t wait to read more from E. Lockhart and I hope you go pick up We Were Liars if you haven’t yet, and remember, if anyone asks about the ending, just lie.
Keep on reading….
